We're looking for architects, designers, landscape architects and engineers to join us on Zoom to get started on AWB's entry for Low Rise: Housing Ideas for Los Angeles. This design challenge, organized by the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles, asks architects and landscape architects to help imagine thoughtful new models of low-rise, multi-unit housing informed by community input and concern for affordability, flexibility, sustainability, and public health.
We plan to form a team from the group that attends the meeting, but a commitment to the longer-term work is not necessary for participation in the kickoff. If you can work cross-platform in Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign, and/or Rhino, that will be helpful to the team effort, going forward.

Providing creative solutions for a variety of programs, Judy is a dynamic combination of experienced presentation coach, corporate trainer, artistic director, and mountaineering guide. She’s a born leader who helps people achieve their best.
Based in Portland, Oregon, Judy also heads up our Gracewriting® Division. A published author and playwright, Judy is a master storyteller who also provides copyediting and quality assurance services for firms like Kodak, Nike and Intel. To top it off, she’s a trained practitioner of Whole Brain® Thinking and would love to talk with you about writing proposals with your whole brain!

South Portland, on the edge of downtown, is perhaps the most potent example of how architecture makes the image of the city. At first a transitional neighborhood, the area became the site of the city's first implemented urban renewal project, South Auditorium. More than eighty acres were condemned and cleared by the then-new Portland Development Commission. The resulting buildings introduced a new, modernist form of urbanism that forever changed the cityscape. While historians sometimes discuss South Auditorium as a local example of American postwar city planning trends, relatively few give attention to the ways that architecture shaped decision-making, and how South Auditorium was a unique kind of urban renewal rooted not in perceived urban problems, but in urban ambitions.
Alexander Benjamin Craghead will relate an unconventional, cultural history of South Portland's architecture, revealing collisions of power, imagination, and urban self-image. Craghead is a historian of technology, representation, and landscape, and holds a Ph.D. in architecture from U.C. Berkeley, where he presently teaches in the program in American Studies. Alex's talk will place a significant emphasis on four distinct ways that architecture in South Portland both shaped, and was shaped by, postwar notions of what makes a good city. You will learn how opportunism and architectural anxieties led to urban renewal, how the city's ambitions fit within the context of national trends and regional rivalries, and how Portland's civic leaders sought to make South Auditorium a re-founding that would change the city's image both for itself and for the outside world. Throughout, architecture was virtually personified, as if it sat in a seat of power alongside planners, developers, city commissioners, and mayors, shaping decisions at every level.
This talk is in conjunction with our current exhibit South Portland and the Long Shadow of Urban Renewal.

This presentation will be divided into two parts. The first part will be a course that provides an overview of the Integrated Building Envelope achieved through the understanding of Design, Material, and Installation in order to create Continuity in both the process and the building. The course will have the following learning objectives:
Define and develop a better understanding of the Building Envelope concept.
Develop a better understanding of the Integrated Building Envelope concept and how Terminations, Transitions, and Penetrations (TTP) impact the performance and sustainability of buildings.
Develop a better understanding of the Design, Material & Installation with a focus on material as it relates to the physics of composite waterproofing systems.
Explore the process of proactively creating coordination between Design, Material and Installation to achieve an Integrated Building Envelope.
The second part will let each participant experience the feeling of working with the materials used and evaluated in the “Full-Size Blindside Mock-Up” while never leaving the comfort of your office or home.
